Flag making for Children in America

Recent discussions with raising awareness among children about the England flag by a prominent Flag Maker led us to look up how the flag is introduced to young children in the United States of America.

The American flag, children are taught is not just a piece of cloth but also a symbol of a country rich in its feelings of unity and pride amongst Americans. You could say that the national flag of a country is an advertising banner in helping the children to understand the history of their national symbol.

In America, the children are taught about the original maker of the national flag, the meaning behind the stars and the stripes and the symbolism behind the colours of the flag.

The American Betsy Ross is supposed to have sewn the first flag for American back in 1776. This is usually the first topic broached with regards to the flag and children are shown pictures of Betsy Ross working on the American flag diligently.

Children are then informed that the fifty stars on the flags represent the fifty states of America and depending on the age of the children, the states can be pointed out on a map. The thirteen stripes represent the original thirteen colonies.

The children will also be taught about the symbolism behind the colours red, blue and white on the American flag. Red is meant to represent the valour of the nation and blue stands for perseverance, vigilance and justice while white means purity.

The flag is also given a ‘birthday on’ on the 14th of June and children are encouraged to remember Flag Day when the design and the flag was approved by the Continental Congress on the 14th of June, 1777.
